Climate

The 2018 vintage was characterized by a long winter marked by rainfall capable of restoring the soil water supply weakened during the 2017 weather pattern. The winter season lasted until early March with temperatures below the historical average, favoring a slow vine recovery. Both spring and the early part of summer continued with frequent rainfall and cool weather. Starting in mid-July, temperatures rose significantly; the long and stable period of good weather favored the slow and regular ripening of the grapes, while still maintaining heterogeneity among the vineyards. Secondine’s harvest took place on September 29.

Vinification

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were destemmed and crushed. Fermentation took about 10 days at a maximum temperature of 30 °C. Malolactic fermentation was completed before winter. The wine matured for at least 12 months in oak barrels. Subsequently, Secondine further aged in bottles before release.

Historical Data

Secondine is one of the historic areas of Barbaresco: located at the foot of the village in the small valley that runs from the Tanaro River to Moccagatta via the Pajè basin. Secondine is one of the most suitable terroirs for the production of Nebbiolo dedicated to Barbaresco. A subzone already recognized by Lorenzo Fantini, author at the end of the 19th century of the Monograph on viticulture and oenology in the province of Cuneo (1879), Secondine is later also mentioned by Renato Ratti in his Map of Barbaresco published in 1984. The silty soil and the wonderful amphitheater that frames and protects this area make this area perfect for Barbaresco production. Secondine by Prunotto represents a profound interpretation of Nebbiolo, characterized by extraordinary elegance and marked by sweet, velvety tannins.

Tasting Notes

Secondine is garnet red with light brick-colored highlights. The nose is complex with sensations of raspberry and rose that combine well with notes of tobacco, white pepper and licorice. The palate is elegantly structured and harmonious, with a fine and sweet tannic texture.
