2018. Winter with a very cold ending: February with snow and minimum temperatures as low as -7°C. With the onset of spring, the weather remained cold and wet, and the vines began budding about ten days later than usual. From mid-April, an abnormal rise in temperatures to 29°C favored abundant fertilization of flowers, but since May, rain has taken center stage again. It was not until July 15 that we saw true summer, which continued until August 25 with temperatures as high as above average, with almost scorching heat in August. The rain, which saved the vintage, came in the third decade of August and met the water needs of the vines. This vintage is characterized by a very generous nature, managed with thinnings.
The result is a very elegant and broad Cuvée where the fruit of the chardonnay is able to express itself at its best. Harvest began on August 13 and ended in the first decade of September, picking beautiful, healthy and perfectly ripe grapes throughout the period. Average yield per hectare of 9,800 kilograms of grapes, equivalent to 6,170 liters of wine (wine yield: 63%).
WINEMAKING
The base wines of the Cuvée Prestige are the result of careful selection of grapes and expert winemaking conducted in full compliance with the Ca’ del Bosco Method. The grapes, hand-picked in small boxes, are graded and cooled. Each cluster is selected by expert eyes and hands, and then benefits from exclusive “berry spa.” A special system of washing and whirlpooling the clusters, through three soaking tanks and a drying tunnel. After crushing in the absence of oxygen, all the musts of the base wines ferment in thermoconditioned steel tanks and remain there until the following March. Seven months of aging is therefore necessary for the wine to clarify, mature and bring out the character of the original vineyards to the fullest. The wines are then expertly blended in the “magic rite” of cuvée creation. Only after aging on the lees for a minimum of 2 years can this Franciacorta express all its richness and identity. Dégorgement takes place in the absence of oxygen, using a unique system designed and patented by Ca’ del Bosco. This avoids oxidative shock and further addition of sulfites. It makes our Franciacortas purer, more pleasant and longer-lived. Finally, each packaged bottle is uniquely marked to ensure traceability.
