In October 2004, Luca Gargano, patron of Velier, traveled to Trinidad to prepare a photo session on rum and the Caribbean accompanied by photographer Fredi Marcarini.
Here Luke discovers that Caroni, a historic local distillery with an attached sugar mill, has been closed and abandoned. His searching spirit, however, drives him further, until he finds a warehouse with hundreds of barrels of aging rum, including some dating back to 1974. So begins the modern history of Caroni, whose bottles, labeled with photos taken by Marcarini during the trip, are already sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.
In 2017, Luke returned to where the distillery stood and decided to try to reunite all former employees. He found 16 of them and had them photographed, among the ruins of the distillery, again by Marcarini himself. Thus was born the Caroni Employees line, which will have two new releases per year.
This full proof was distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2020 and is dedicated to Dayanand “Yunkoo” Ballon, it is a blend of 6 casks of Caroni rum.
