1084 was the founding year of the Carthusian order of fathers, one of the oldest in the monastic world, founded by St. Bruno, who was born in Cologne in 1030. Esteemed professor of the cathedral-school of Reims, having reached the highest celebrity, he decided to follow his Vocation and abandon the world and all privileges to devote himself to the monastic life. He embarked on the journey accompanied by six friends and after numerous attempts that were unsatisfactory to him, he arrived in Grénoble, attracted by the reputation of the young bishop Hugues. He related that in a dream he saw God building a dwelling at the heart of a mountain called Chartreuse, in a place so sparsely inhabited as to be called “the desert,” seven stars pointed the way to this place. The sight of the arrival of Bruno and the six friends was intrerpreted as Divine Providence’s response to this dream, and it was to this place that they were led. It is 1084 when Bruno finds, in that place, the place he was looking for. It was then quickly built into a system of cells connected by a gallery, along with facilities where fraternal community life could be cultivated, a key element, St. Bruno thought, especially thinking about the rigors of living in solitude. The order of Pères Chartreux was born here.
