Contrada Rampante (Contrada R) is the highest Contrada located over 1000m high. The vineyard is located at the limits of vine cultivation on Etna, and produces one of the most delicate and aromatic wines to be found on the slopes of the volcano. The soils are very old lava, more sandy and oxidized than elsewhere. Because of its considerable height, it is always the last vineyard to be harvested. The extension is 1.4Ha.

RAMPANT CONTRADA 2015
This is a vintage of great vitality in the vines, fertilized by a rainy winter, followed by much heat during the summer. The long period of rain during early October weakened the peels, a malignant cloud hung around and dripped moisture for weeks. Dew shone on the clusters every morning. The rain brought mold and other problems, so to keep the grapes healthy they went back to the vineyards again after thinning to clean the grapes, bunch by bunch, grain by grain.
They could have waited longer for the high-altitude vines to push even more ripening due to the altitude, cold weather, sparser clusters, and plenty of propolis to keep them healthy; in this district, they harvested on Oct. 27, the last day of the harvest. The nerello wines are good, variety wines, mineral and salty. The vintage is not like 2012, nor 2014, however, it paints a complete and structured picture of Etna, with a good skeleton, high acidity, and low alcohol.
