This wine takes its name from Ca’Marcanda, the cellar. Ca’Marcanda is the Piedmontese term for “house of endless negotiations” and refers to the many hours that Angelo Gaja spent convincing the previous owners of the property to sell him the property. This vineyard comes from one of the oldest sites on the Ca’Marcanda estate in Castegneto Carducci (Bolgheri). Its 100% white lands (white soils) are ideal for producing long-lived wines. This is the flagship of the winery and is produced only in exceptional years, guaranteeing quality and safety to buyers and collectors. Juiciness and concentration are the characteristics of the 2015 harvest which shows elegance and drinkability.

Winter 2014 was a cold winter, followed by a rainy spring, thus providing the right amount of water reserves on the ground and decisively hindering the pressure of the disease in the vineyards. The summer of 2015 began with a positive and harmonious situation in the vineyard, which was fundamental to face the very high temperatures of July and August. In the vineyard very little selection was required and the 2015 grapes that entered the cellar were clean and healthy. Fermentation took place regularly and without arrests, resulting in medium-high acidity with considerable fresh aromas. The harvest began with Cabernet Franc on 11 September and ended with Cabernet Sauvignon on 29 September.

Denomination: Bolgheri DOP

Grapes: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc.

Soil: White earths, white stony soils, rich in calcareous clay, with good drainage, ideal for the cultivation of long-lived structured wines.

Tasting notes: Compared to the previous harvest, the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2015 Camarcanda leads to a precise and direct character. The nose opens with earthy and balsamic notes of violets, roots, bark and sap. On the palate it is rich, with concentrated and crunchy notes of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, flint and red orange. The finish is tasty, almost fleshy, with a precise note of iron that persists in the aftertaste. Fine-grained tannins, embraced by a soft body with a strong personality. The backbone of this wine is the solid structure perfectly balanced by the concentration of fruit. Significant aging potential.

Vineyards: planted on white soils rich in limestone, solid clay and stones.

Fermentation: the two varieties ferment and macerate separately for about 15 days.

Aging: after 18 months of aging in oak, they are assembled and then left to mature for a few months in the bottle before being released.
