The first beer officially brewed by the Austrian brewery Stift Engelszell Trappistenbier Brauerei, admitted into the consortium of Trappist sites since 2012 , was Gregorius, affectionately dedicated to the first abbot of the Alpine community, Father Gregorius Eisvogel.
Gregorius glows an intense dark brown in the glass, aromas of herbs and licorice dominate the nose that are underscored by notes of ripe fruit. A strong malt body comes through in the initial taste, which features aromas of roasted coffee,Local honey and Alsatian wine yeast evoke a nice interplay of sweet and sour on the palate Slightly bitter aromas of chocolate accompany the warm finish of this massive Trappist beer.
