Krug Grande Cuvée was born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to offer the best Champagne ever each year, regardless of weather variations. Since 1843, Maison Krug has honored this mission with each new edition of Krug Grande Cuvée-the ultimate expression of Champagne.
Krug Grande Cuvée is recreated each year, pushing beyond the concept of vintage, always from a blend of more than 120 wines from over 10 different vintages. The richness of the scents and aromas obtained from this skillful blending would be impossible to express with wines from a single vintage.
In this blend, the dynamic 2014 Pinot Noirs are derived from a wide range of plots throughout the Champagne region, while the fruity, full-bodied Chardonnays were selected from terroirs in the Montagne de Reims, Sézannais and Côte des Blancs. Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne Rive Gauche were particularly bright, with magnificent expression of fruit from plots in Leuvrigny. To complement these wines of the year, I selected reserve Pinot Noirs from terroirs in the Montagne de Reims Sud renowned for their structure, including a 2005 Ambonnay. Reserve Chardonnays from Avize and Mesnil-sur-Oger wines from a wide range of vintages are particularly featured in this blend, while reserve Meunier wines, particularly from 2013, add freshness, intensity and a chiseled structure.
Every year since its founding, Maison Krug has created a new edition of Krug Grande Cuvée to offer the most generous expression of Champagne.
This bottle is part of the 170th Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, a blend of 195 wines selected from 12 different years. The youngest was in 2014, while the oldest was in 1998. Resting for about seven years in Krug cellars gives this Edition remarkable expression and elegance. Each of his glasses is the result of more than 20 years of craftsmanship excellence.
Krug Grande Cuvée 170th Edition was composed around the 2014 harvest, an unpredictable year in which hot dry periods and cool rainy ones alternated. The wines developed in good conditions, ensuring a generous harvest. The weather contrast preserved freshness and resulted in great heterogeneity within the region, underscoring the importance of the Maison’s approach that treats each plot as its own.
To create this Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée, Chef de Caves sought to accentuate the year’s varied and elegant aromatic expressions with reserve wines from different plots and 11 different vintages. The care devoted to the vineyards and the attention given by Krug to the unique properties of each soil have resulted in the great expressiveness of this Krug Grande Cuvée Edition.
In total, reserve wines from the Maison’s extensive collection make up 45 percent of the final blend, a contribution that brings the indispensable breadth and roundness to each edition of Krug Grande Cuvée.
The final composition of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 11% Meunier.
Krug Grande Cuvée was born out of the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to create the best Champagne possible, year after year, regardless of climatic variations. Each year, Maison Krug pays tribute to its dream with a new edition of Krug Grande Cuvée-the most generous expression of Champagne.
