Luce della Vite 2020 Toscana Rosso IGT Marchese Frescobaldi cl 75
Luce is the first wine to be made from a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot in Montalcino.
A perfect harmony between the structure and elegance of Sangiovese and the roundness and softness of Merlot, it is the estate’s signature wine, capable of representing, vintage after vintage, the original interpretation of the terroir.
It was through the collaboration of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi families that the idea of combining the roundness and softness of Merlot with the structure and elegance of Sangiovese in the land of the Brunello di Montalcino, famous Italian wine around the world and made only from Sangiovese grapes.
Since 2002, the responsibility has passed entirely into the hands of Lamberto Frescobaldi, who in the land of the Brunello di Montalcino continues to write Luce’s story, Super Tuscan wine appreciated worldwide, combining the tradition of Sangiovese, a typical local grape variety, with the innovation of Merlot introduced in Montalcino in the 1970s.
LIGHT 2020
The months of January and February were particularly mild and dry. This condition led to early budding of the vines starting from the second week of March for Sangiovese and from the third week for Merlot. Spring then saw warm weather with rainfall especially in May, favoring the course of an excellent flowering that occurred slightly early around the last week of the month, followed by rapid fruit set. The first three weeks of June were affected by the presence of rainfall, which allowed plants to prepare for the summer season, which was hot with little rain. In the last week of August, two very important rains brought relief to the plants and lowered temperatures, creating ideal conditions to bring the grapes to fruition. The harvest began on Sept. 3 with Merlot, and the grapes were in excellent health and ripeness, with great aromatic potential, due in part to the temperature swings between night and day that occurred in the days leading up to the harvest. While the Sangiovese harvest began on September 16 and continued until the end of the month.
TASTING NOTES
Deep ruby red in color, Luce 2020 stands out on the nose for its complexity and elegance, characterized by ripe black fruits, particularly blackberry and mulberry, which are joined by hints of cocoa and sweet spices. On the palate it is harmonious, lively, and well structured, balanced by vibrant acidity and soft, silky tannins that give an elegant, lingering finish.
