Planeta Cometa Fiano Sicilia Menfi D.O.C. 2021
A great white wine from southern Italian grapes, able to compare with the world’s great whites: that was the initial plan. For this reason, experimentation with Fiano, a noble and ancient variety of Campanian origin, began in the 1990s. Thus Cometa was born, which best expresses, in an original and unique way, the characteristics of this extraordinary grape variety. Intense, fruity aromas and its great structure and minerality make it one of the benchmark white wines of southern Italy today.

HARVEST TIME: September 25-28. WINE-MAKING: Grapes were hand-picked in 15 kg crates and refrigerated at about 12-13 °C. They were then destemmed, crushed and went through soft pressing and static sedimentation in stainless steel at low temperature, 6-7 °C; then the clear part was racked and fermented in 90% stainless steel tanks and 10% in 35 hl oak barrels at about 14-15 °C for 12/14 days. At the end of fermentation, the wine was filled with the same mass, leaving it on the primary lees, with daily agitation
via bâtonner or agitator; in February, after a period of about 4 months, the wine was racked off by stripping it from the coarse lees, leaving it on the finer lees with weekly agitation. Finally, it was assembled and prepared for bottling.

ORGANOLEPTIC NOTES: Pure Fiano from limestone-clay soils that help to bring out the aromatic markers of Mediterranean scrub characteristic of this grape variety. Thus, among the broom flower and thyme, delicate scents of chamomile, hay, mango and pomelo can be traced. Mineral palate with vibrant savory traces that shake and quench thirst. Then the pace changes to become slower and more harmonious, an invitation to sip this signature white with proper calm while fully enjoying every nuance. The finish gives a silky tactile sensation with a very refined aftertaste of ripe apricots, blossoming almonds and basil leaf.
PAIRING: Without fear of triviality with a snapper caught and put on the grill.
VINTAGE NOTES – MENFI 2021
The 2021 harvest in Menfi began on August 8, with the harvest of Chardonnay. The 2020 harvest had been a high quality but low production vintage in Sicily. For this reason, too, the vines had enough energy to face the next vintage.
For Planeta after more than 10 years of sustainable farming and a few years in conversion to organic, everything has been going great and the weather has come to the rescue.
Sprouting occurred slightly early, but spring weather patterns did not accentuate earliness: they arrived at harvest about a week early.
In the summer months-crucial for quality in Sicily-while it is true that there were some very hot days, it is also true that there were, numerically, fewer days of extraordinary heat than in vintages such as 2017.
But what resulted in a decidedly happy harvest were some rains, which were abundant for Sicilian summers: one in June, one in July and one in August. In between, dry days perfect for harvesting. Magic wand!
These rains mitigated the effect of the heat and gave a special harvest in Menfi. In the west, they had the highest hoped-for quality, particularly on the Sicilian white grapes, which loved the dry spring and some well-timed rains. Healthy, perfect grapes; quantities roughly in the middle between the 2020 and 2018 harvests; in general, a production so average for a regular harvest. At Planeta there is NO drop in production
