Solaia Antinori 2019 Toscana IGT cl 75
From the sunniest slice of the Tignanello hill. From the best grapes of the best vineyard. The rest is passion, care, attention and research. Thus was born Solaia, made from the choicest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese grapes from the vineyard of the same name.
Climate
The 2019 season in Chianti Classico was characterized by regular weather conditions, with a rather cold winter with little precipitation and a cool and rainy early spring, especially in April and May. The summer was warm, with no temperature extremes, and characterized by slightly above-average rainfall that allowed proper plant growth of both vegetation and clusters. Beginning at the end of August and throughout September and October, optimal weather allowed the three varieties grown in the Solaia vineyard to ripen perfectly. Grapes were harvested starting in late September, beginning with Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, until the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest was completed on October 14. Total annual rainfall: 1005.8 mm Average temperature April 1-October 14: 19.7 °C Rainfall April 1-October 16: 452 mm
Vinification
Attention was high, both in the vineyard during harvest and in the winery, where the grapes were de-stemmed and the berries, before being gently crushed, carefully sorted at the sorting table and then transferred by gravity to the tanks. In fact, it is essential that only the perfect grapes arrive in the 60-Hl truncated cone vinification tanks. During fermentation and maceration, great care was taken to maintain the correct balance between the fruit and the quality of the tannin so as to give the wine sweetness and fragrance as well as identity and character. Immediately after racking, malolactic fermentation was started, which, in barriques, enhanced the complexity and pleasantness of the wine. The aging process took place in new French oak barrels for about 18 months. After an initial period of aging in separate batches, these were assembled to complete evolution in wood.
Historical Data
Solaia is a vineyard of about 20 hectares facing southwest between 350 and 400 meters above sea level on rocky limestone soil with alberese and galestro rock, located at Tenuta Tignanello. The Antinori family first produced this wine with the 1978 vintage; the initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was repeated in 1979. In later vintages, 20% Sangiovese was introduced and some corrections were made in the ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon to Cabernet Franc, leading to the current composition. Solaia is produced only in exceptional vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983,1984 and 1992.
Tasting Notes
Solaia 2019 has a deep ruby red color. The nose is distinguished by its aromatic complexity and finesse: notes of small red fruits, particularly raspberry and mulberry, alternate with sweet hints of ripe apricot and blood orange combined with light floral nuances of rose; perfectly integrated are the evident aromas of coffee bean, chocolate and licorice, accompanied by fresh sensations of mint and white pepper, capable of giving the rich bouquet a pleasant and delicate spicy note. The palate is enveloping, harmonious, with an excellent, balanced structure; sweet, vibrant tannins make it compact, persuasive and with an extraordinarily long finish. Very persistent aftertaste, where the roasted and spicy notes perceived on the nose can be found.
