It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern red wine blended with nontraditional varieties (such as Cabernet), and among the first red wines in Chianti Classico not to use white grapes. Tignanello is a milestone. It is made from a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, on the rolling hills enclosed between the Greve and Pesa valleys, and covers 319 hectares of land, with 127 hectares under vine. Among its vineyards are two treasures: the Tignanello vineyard and the Solaia vineyard, which lie on the same hillside, on soils derived from Pliocene marine marl with limestone and shale, and enjoy warm days and cool nights during the growing season. The vineyards of the same name produce Solaia and Tignanello, which have been called by the international press “among the most influential wines in Italian wine history.” According to Marchesi Antinori, they represent an ongoing challenge and a never-ending passion. Tenuta Tignanello’s vineyards are composed mainly of native Sangiovese and non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Climate

The season was characterized by a not very cold autumn and winter with little rainfall, conditions that favored slightly earlier budding than in previous years. The spring, and therefore vegetative, season saw the establishment of difficult weather conditions, with frequent rains until the end of May; this caused a slowdown in plant growth but did not compromise plant health. The months of June and July, by contrast, were very hot, and it was only in August that there were some rains that helped the plants to proceed their vegetative-productive process regularly. The months of September and October were very favorable for harvesting operations, thanks in part to temperature ranges between day and night that allowed, especially for Sangiovese, optimal conditions for grape quality. The Sangiovese harvests began in the second half of September, while the Cabernet was harvested until the middle of October, bringing excellent quality, fully ripe grapes to the winery. From the very beginning of winemaking, one could appreciate musts with very interesting flavor notes and colors, which presaged an excellent vintage.
