Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Cuvée Saint Pètersbourg
La Cuvée
Cuvée Saint-Pétersbourg comes from the “assemblage” of Maison Veuve Clicquot’s Brut Yellow Label. As with all the Maison’s other Cuvées, Pinot Noir predominates, comprising 50-55% of the composition and giving characteristics of structure and power. Just a third of Chardonnay provides finesse, freshness and elegance, while a touch of Pinot Meunier (15-20%) completes the roundness.
This Cuvée is elaborated from wines from about sixty “Cru” wines. Intended to ensure the Maison’s continuity of style, reserve wines represent, depending on the vintage, 25 to 40 percent of the blend; from 5 or 6 harvests, they are stored in vats, individually, respecting the origin of the vineyard and vintages.
After the “prise de mousse,” this wine rests on the lees in the cellars for 3 to 4 years. To accentuate the maturation notes of this Cuvée, a specially created dosage liqueur is added: it is elaborated from an “assemblage” of the best reserve wines, specifically selected for their maturity and aromatic richness. In addition, after “dégorgement,” resting lasts at least 6 months. This particularly long maturation time allows not only to achieve a perfect integration of the dosage liqueur to the wine but also to unveil beautiful notes of evolution.
The Tasting
Upon tasting, one first appreciates the intense color with clear golden hues; the froth is very fine and persistent. The bouquet reveals, at first impression, fruity scents: in an intense and complex whole, notes of ripe fruit, dried fruits, brioche and spices stand out elegantly; a very delicate floral “touche” (dried flowers) completes this perfectly harmonious profile.
On the palate, prolonged maturation amplifies the roundness and aromatic intensity: toasted notes (toast, pralines) are clearly noticeable, with some warmer nuances, such as spice cake or honey. The balance between structure and freshness is perfect.
The Cuvée Saint-Pétersbourg is a magnificent aperitif wine: the unique aromatic “fondu,” due to the specific measures taken for maturation and dosage, will win over Champagne enthusiasts with character.
