Monkey Shoulder
uses only malt Scotch whiskey from three of Speyside’s finest distilleries. This particular bland attracts the attention of the country’s leading bartenders for its smooth and rich qualities, making it ideal for mixing and drinking in the more traditional way. As Charlotte Voisey, of London’s Apartment 195, explains, “the attractive name and bottle arouse curiosity and, once explained, it makes you smile.”
Rooted in the malt whiskey tradition, Monkey Shoulder is inspired by and named in honor of William Grant’s malt men, who are among the few still manually processing malting barley with a sheil (wooden shovel). Monkey Shoulder was a nickname given to a temporary injury suffered by some malt men many years ago as a result of bending over repeatedly while turning the malt. Fortunately, labor practices have now changed and this condition no longer exists.
Made in small batches of just 27 barrels, Monkey Shoulder’s smooth, round taste has accents of malty sweetness, vanilla, jam and barley sugar. The iconic bottle design, complete with three brass monkeys, each representing its constituent single malts, on the shoulder of the bottle is sure to attract confident, liberal-minded people with discerning taste and make sure it doesn’t hide in the drinks cabinet!
