HISTORY: For more than 300 years, the inhabitants of the enchanting and beautiful island of Chiosn in the Aegean have harvested the tears of the Mastiha tree. Real Mastiha, the magic ingredient in Skinos Mastiha Spirit, is found only in Chios. Long considered a truly valuable commodity, its healing properties have been appreciated for centuries. As far back as 600 B.C., mastiha was the secret ingredient in a distillate that traveled through the ancient world and began to be used as a delicious and effective digestive. Today, Skinos continues the tradition and remains the only mastiha distillate in the world.
PRODUCT: Mastiha is the distillate of the resin of the Mastic tree, which grows on the island of Chios. This resin is initially infused in alcohol, left to macerate and then distilled in a copper still. After distillation, sugar syrup and water are added until an alcohol content of 30 percent is reached. Skinos’ Mastiha is the only one from a true distillation process of the raw material, while its competitors are derived from simple macerations. In Greece Slinos is the market leader in its category and is present in all the most important cocktail bars in Greece and Europe.
PROFILE: Vegetal, sweet scented, with an intense resin flavor. On the palate notes of carrot, cucumber, mint, celery with a balsamic finish.
