Legend has it that Clynelish was once lashed by an epic blizzard. The storm’s unnatural frost put the precious barrels at risk of certain ruin: their contents froze in the icy winds until a mysterious feline creature silently appeared. Insensitive to the biting temperatures, he turned his hypnotic golden eyes on the barrels, wrapping them in a cocoon of magical warmth. The rescued oak tree was transformed with rare depths of mysterious and bright spices, strengthened from the cold forever.

Retreating against a wild beauty in the bramble-filled woods of the Highlands, Clynelish is an even more remote distillery than the others. It is also the natural habitat of the elusive Scottish wildcat, Felix Sylvestris. Few of these evanescent creatures remain and are seldom seen, but the wildcat symbol is emblazoned on the Clynelish distillery, which treasures it forever.

Bright as a golden eye amidst the light, this Clynelish shows a spicier side to its bright fruitiness and waxy texture. The rich liquid shines with complex aromas of fruit, herbs and deeper, more fragrant oak spices. The smooth texture and rich, wine-sweet flavors growl with pepper spice after a long secondary maturation in Pedro Ximenez/Oloroso barrels. A single malt as rare and elusive as its mysterious guardian.

BODY

Medium.

NOSE

Creamy top notes soon give way to light but complex fruity and herbaceous aromas; subtle and discreet hints of fruity ground beef, canned pears, and even heather honey. Deeper still, spicy hints of oak foreshadow soaring intensity on the palate. A drop of water enhances the herbaceous note, while also introducing a familiar waxy hint.

PALATE

A very smooth and enveloping texture introduces a lively, rich and vinous palate overall, the palate well balanced by peppery and growling oak spices. A little water enhances the sweetness, directs the softness of the paste toward waxy and rounds out the flavors, which soon give way to spicy heat.

FINAL

Quite long, chili-spiced, luscious drying, with lingering pepper. A little water enhances the creamy, smooth texture and adds a little more spice
