Mormoreto Frescobaldi 2019 Toscana IGT
Walking among the rows of Cabernet and, Petit Verdot, one’s thoughts always run to 150 years ago, when Frescobaldi’s ancestors first planted these varietals with the desire to produce a great wine. Since 1983 this desire has been fulfilled with Cru Mormoreto, a wine with a vibrant, deep and harmonious character. Since 2013 a small amount of Sangiovese has further emphasized its elegance.
Climate trend
At Castle Nipozzano, winter 2019 was characterized by long periods of sunshine with low temperatures. Spring, on the other hand, has been cool, and the rains that have fallen have ensured good water reserves to better cope with the hot summer days. The summer period was characterized by temperature fluctuations that helped provide coolness at night; this was especially helped by the usual breezes from the Apennine slopes. The grapes were thus accompanied to ripening by a combination of warmth from the sun and refreshing breezes; the clusters arrived at harvest in perfect sanitary condition, and production was expressed in wines typical of the area, marked by a good acid vein and silky tannins.
Vinification and maturation
The Mormoreto vineyard is located at an elevation of 300 meters above sea level on sandy soils with a southwest exposure. Grapes from the Mormoreto vineyard were harvested by hand in 15-kg boxes. After an initial sorting of the clusters in the vineyard, they were further sorted upon arrival at the winery. This attention to detail ensured the highest possible quality. The 2019 vintage yielded wonderfully ripe grapes with a wonderful acidic streak. Malo-lactic fermentation occurred immediately after racking. At the end of the year, Mormoreto began its maturation in French oak barrels, where it remained for the next two years, deriving maximum benefit from the natural micro-oxygenation provided by the oak. After bottling, subsequent months of aging allowed Mormoreto to balance itself, expressing its elegance and potential to the fullest.
Tasting Notes
Mormoreto 2019 shows an intense and brilliant ruby red color with purple hues. The bouquet is extremely complex, ranging from notes of red fruits-such as cranberry, raspberry and black cherry-to hints of date and fig, with a delicately citrusy finish. The floral sensations of jasmine and rosehip are also interesting. Later, more evolved notes of coffee bean, cocoa powder, tea and tobacco can be recognized. The palate is complex, persistent and balanced. The tannins are soft and silky. Extremely long finish.
