It all begins around the first half of the 1800s, at the foot of the famous cliff of Roccella Ionica, formerly known as Anphisia.
In this secluded place, a young man named Vincenzo, the progenitor of the Errigo family, distills at night the medicinal herbs he collects at the foot of the rock face and secretly sells the infusions to trusted friends.
The ingredients he uses and the way he makes his liquor are enshrined in a secret recipe handed down to him by his dear mother.
The unique, unmistakable and balanced flavor and intense aroma make Rupes a bitter that is also appreciated overseas. Made with thirty local medicinal and aromatic herbs, it has a strong and refined taste. It is made, even today, using the old artisanal method of cold maceration of ingredients, including wild fennel, Calabrian licorice roots and bay leaves, which give it freshness, persistence of flavor, character and palatability. The cold method involves infusing a hydroalcoholic solution, for at least twenty days, in large steel vats with high-quality medicinal herbs and then reducing the alcohol content by adding water and sugar.
Excellent after meals or as an aperitif, it is also enjoyable as a drink diluted with seltzer and ice. The bottle’s sleek and essential design and its sophisticated logo identify the contents from the noble past. A bitter that is a symbol of Calabrian tradition. A source of pride for this beautiful and wild land, of which Rupes encapsulates precious aromas and flavors.
