In Orval’s long past, there has probably always been a brewery at the abbey. This is evidenced by ancient maps, a precise description of the process left by a Franciscan visitor three hundred years ago, and a place called “hops” very close to the monastery. Brewing beer was, in fact, the custom in these regions unfavorable to vine cultivation. Beer was first considered for its nutritional properties. It was called “liquid bread”
